Commercial photographers can work for any number of industries including digital, retail, fashion, editorial, lifestyle, location, and product work. A commercial photographer doesn't just point and shoot. Commercial photography includes set design, styling, and lighting to produce the most beneficial surroundings and compositions. An advertising photographer has to be able to view the final product packaging, label, or print or TV ad with the end result in mind. Advertising photography can include Web shots, catalog poses, company literature, posters, labels and more. There is nowhere that advertising can go that a camera cannot. Commercial photography can take place in many different settings from indoor studios to outdoor remote locations. They have to be willing to go to where the shots are found. Photographers carry a lot of weight on their creative shoulders. A graphic used in an ad or other media can make or break the project. Photographers-commercial or advertising-capture a moment in time, a sense of style, and memories. They can tell a story with a single photo, get an idea across without any words, or evoke an emotion with just one glance. Choosing the right commercial photographer can be a difficult task. This is, literally, where the pictures do all the talking. Be sure to check out portfolios and references. Ask if they work with digital cameras or traditional film cameras, or both. Versatility is a great asset in a photographer. If you are on a strict budget you might want to try the services of an apprentice photographer or even an advertising student that is hoping to build a portfolio. Local universities or colleges are a great resource to find cheap but good talent. Each photographer specializes in one or more types of photography. You can find a commercial photographer (photographers who take wedding and other event photos are usually referred to as family photographers or portraiture photographers) that might choose to only work in head shots for actors or those that work in underwater or aerial photography. Each photographer, no matter his specialty, will have his or her own distinct look. If you don't care for the style of the photos in their portfolio don't expect any different style in yours. Costs will vary and will depend on level of difficulty, length of time to project completion, location choices, and your budget. Get a few bids and ask detailed questions about delays, weather (if applicable), development and print costs and changes to contracts.
